Running is a physical activity in which people move rapidly on foot and is very beneficial to health. Running improves cardiovascular and respiratory fitness and health, reduces blood cholesterol, increases metabolism, strengthens bones, and increases self-esteem and emotional state. Running is known to induces something called a “runner’s high,” a euphoric state experienced following running. Running assists in weight loss and weight control. Running also prevents life threatening ailments, such as heart disease and obesity. People run at varying speeds and distances depending on the individual’s ability and goals.
